There's an old casino and a darkened arcade, containing what seems like hundreds of pinball machines and video games. Everyone is gearing up for a 'Miss Malaika' beauty competition the next day ('Come and see the most beautiful ladies in the Republic of South Sudan!'), and the place is in high spirits. The kids are dressed in the global urban uniform that seems to unite youth from Libya to Singapore--baggy, low-slung jeans, heavy chains and necklaces, athletic jerseys, and caps worn backward." (60)
